Narrowed

Inspired by Philip Wakeham's 'Anything is possible' attitude to engineering art I woke up one morning and decided to implement Royce Creasey's aerodynamic improvement hints (see his technical paper on this site) and cut the fairing into three pieces, chopped four inches out of the middle, and reassembled it!
The narrower fairing has little impact on comfort, reduces frontal area a little, but amazingly has made the bike much less susceptible to side winds and the turbulent air behind large lorries, it is more 'indifferent' as Royce puts it.
Quite why this is so I have little idea, possibly the larger hole under the headlight is enabling air to escape inside the sides of the fairing rather than washing down the sides outside the fairing, or possibly being less 'streamlined' is making the turbulent air behind the lorries unable to break through the thicker boundary layer and heave the fairing sideways, one thing which is certain is the way the double layer screen kicks the air well over the top of my head minimising wind roar in my ears, also the rush of air alongside my knees is terrific, it hurts my arm to hold my hand outside my knees yet my knees are in almost tranquil air, amazing!
As Royce says, the more I learn the more I see there is to learn so in proportion the less I actually know - What a Black Art!
And it cost nothing to modify the fairing too :) (Footnote - 2 months later I sold the bike without the fairing, seat and tailbox and the new owner sold it in bits on ebay, amazing...)
